An Essential Group of Vitamins
B-Complex and B-12 Injections are two of the most popular treatments received at Emerald Wellness Integrative Health Clinic. The reason for this is due to the fact that so many people can benefit from intramuscular or intravenous supplementation and the positive effects are often felt immediately. Our B-complex injections include a balanced blend of B1 (Thiamin), B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Niacin), B5 (Pantothenic Acid), B6 (Pyridoxine), B7 (Biotin), B9 (Folate), and B12 (Cobalamin). Patients whom benefit from B-vitamin injections often experience an immediate boost in energy and feel improvements in mood and cognitive functioning. B-vitamins are critical for the healthy functioning of many important biological processes in the body, such as nerve functioning, proper metabolism, the formation of red blood cells, DNA production, brain development, and keeping the nervous system and immune system working properly.
The NHANES (National and Nutrition Examination Survey) discovered that North Americans are most commonly lacking in iron, B-Vitamins, magnesium, calcium, Vitamin D, and Vitamin C. To understand the importance of this a deficiency in B-Vitamins can cause fatigue, depression, anxiety, mood swings, poor memory, headaches, muscle weakness and anemia. There are a number of factors which can cause an individual to become deficient in essential b-vitamins such as poor diet, age, genetics, illness, stress, and GI disorders. A very common genetic mutation in Canadians, affecting as many as 40% of the population, is a variant of the MTHFR gene. This gene makes certain individuals less able to utilize folate (Vitamin B9) in the body which can cause a number of health problems. In order to deal with MTHFR mutations it is often necessary to intake much higher levels of folate (B9) and infusion therapy is often the most efficient way to do this.

Methods of Administration
Receiving adequate amounts of B-vitamins is possible through eating a varied and balanced diet. Unfortunately, a number of factors can cause a patient to become deficient in these vitamins such as age, illness, genetics, and stress. At Emerald Wellness, we often perform comprehensive bloodwork to determine if you may be deficient in certain B-vitamins. While laboratory testing is useful it does not always provide us with the entire picture. It is possible to have adequate levels of the vitamin in the bloodstream, but this is meaningless if our bodies are unable to engage the metabolic pathways required to utilize the vitamin (as seen in individuals with genetic MTHFR mutations).
One of the most effective ways to administer b-vitamins to the system is through B-complex and B-12 intramuscular injections. This is a common practice in many medical facilities around the world. Administering the vitamins directly into the muscle tissue allows the therapeutic substance to slowly release directly into the blood stream over a longer duration of time. Patients are then able to reap the benefits of a b-vitamin boost from days to weeks.
B-vitamins are commonly administered intravenously as well with great effect. At Emerald Wellness, we generally opt to administer B-vitamins through the intramuscular injection route since this is less invasive, but if a patient is already receiving an intravenous infusion such as Vitamin C, we commonly add a balanced mix of B-vitamins to the infusion. It is important to note that when supplementing with B-vitamins one must take care to administer a balance of all of the B-vitamins, since over supplementing with one in particular can actually deplete levels of the others.
